All About Eczema
Eczema
A common skin condition that doesn’t discriminate. Atopic Dermatitis or well known as Eczema is a chronic skin disease. This condition is characterized by inflammation, redness, dry skin, and can be itchy or burn. It is typically seen in childhood but you can get it at any age.
Eczema can also develop on any part of the body. It is commonly seen on the hands, face, elbows, and knees. It can look different for everyone, symptoms can include:
Redness
Dry Flakes
Darkening or Lightening of Skin
Burning
Itching
Thickening or Hardening of Skim
There is not a known cause but there are many things that can affect your chances of developing Eczema.
Genetics:
Having a family history of a condition makes you more susceptible to developing that condition. Genetics play a role in the development and health of our skin. When that is compromised it can change the skin barrier and make it more susceptible to disease.
Environmental Factors:
This can include numerous things such as weather, fragrance, exposure to tobacco smoke, dry skin, and air pollutants. It is important to reduce exposure to toxins in your environment. Hydrating your skin will reduce the inflammation and help soothe your skin.
Immune System Dysfunction:
The Immune System is important in fighting infections and disease. When our Immune system is damaged it can cause inflammation in the body which can lead to Eczema and other conditions.
Now, this is such a common condition but how is it treated?
In Western medicine it is common to take oral medications or steroids to manage Eczema. But, it doesn’t treat the condition itself, it controls it. There is no cure, but how can I manage it more holistically?
You do need to find your root cause. Typically, inflammation and environmental toxins are the culprit for Eczema. If you are suffering from Eczema some ways you can improve your symptoms are:
Reduce your stress
Remove inflammatory things like Seed Oils, Conventional Dairy, and Gluten. After some time you can slowly reintroduce the Dairy and Gluten.
Use soothing topicals
Make sure the area stays clean and hydrated
Reduce your exposure to toxins
Optimize your digestion
